Recall: 1990-1992 Daihatsu Rocky has check valve issues

Daihatsu Rocky

Stop the presses! While the rest of the world has been yanking its hair out over that little dustup at Toyota, some actual recall news has been slipping through the cracks. For example, did you know that 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavors are having salted road issues that lead to fuel leaks? Or that 2005 Honda Odysseys have bad liftgate struts? Tsk, tsk. However, all that pales in comparison to the following paragraph.

Turns out, that the check valve in the fuel vapor evaporative emissions control system of 1990-1992 Daihatsu Rockys might crack, causing fumes to fill the cabin. Gasoline fumes inside your Rocky’s cabin are bad (think fire, explosions), especially if you smoke. Of course, if you own a convertible Rocky, this won’t be too much of an issue. Still, might as well take advantage of this NHTSA recall at your local Daihatsu dealer. Wherever that might be.

Also, in case you’ve been worried sick about it, there are no recalls for the Toyota Starlet. Phew!

Wholesale Used Car Prices Rise 3%

The RVI Market Update, just released tonight (March 19) reports that “wholesale values increased by 3.0% (RVI Used Car Price Index) compared to January, and remain much higher than the depressed values of a year-ago (19.6% higher than February 2009 values).” It’s as I’ve been saying recently: prices are starting to rebound and now is the time to buy a used car before prices go even higher.

Just think how much prices would have risen without a depressed Toyota market. (Edmunds.com reported its values dropped 4.5%.) Even with its troubles, Toyota is still leading in certified pre-owned sales (in spite of a drop) because all certified pre-owned programs dropped in February.

On the car side, the largest increases came from the Small Sedan (and it will get worse as gas prices continue to creep up) and the Sporty Coupe segments; and from the Full-Size SUV and Full-Size Pickup segments on the truck side. The latter is going to drop, though, as gas prices get higher.

Amelia Island Sees Big Money and Rare Cars

Since 1996 the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance has attracted some of the world’s most significant cars to compete for the coveted “Best in Show Honors”, and for twelve years RM’s Automobiles of Amelia Island Auction has complimented that event with its sale of rare and historic cars.  This year was no exception.

The Amelia Island event is not for those looking for an affordable classic.  It took only 98 cars to bring RM’s total sales to $19,100,000 with a 1930 Duesenberg Model J Sport Berline taking the high bid at $1,705,000.

Gooding & Company made an impressive inaugural debut with their Amelia auction selling 58 cars for $16,100,000 and made the highest sale of the weekend at $2.750,000 for the 2009 Amelia Island Concours Best of Show winner, a 1931 Avions Voisin C20 Mylord Demi-Berline.

The 2010 Amelia Island Concours Best of Show award went to a 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster owned by Sam and Emily Mann. Another top honor, the Concours de Sport Best of Show, went to a 1961 Maserati Tipo 61 Birdcage.
