Mercedes Gullwings old and new return to Mexico for Carrera Panamericana revival

Once upon a time, long-distance road rallies were all the rage in motorsports. Sportscars raced down open roads across countries from sea to shining sea in spectacular form. But while two of the most famous took place in Italy – the Mille Miglia and the Targa Florio – another took place right here in North America.

The Carrera Panamericana was held in the early 1950s in Mexico and was widely regarded as one of the most dangerous races in the world. In 1952, Karl Kling and Hans Klenk took the checkered flag in a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL “Gullwing”, but only after a collision with a vulture – yes, a vulture – heavily damaged the car and Herr Klenk’s head in the process (hence the grille bars on the windscreen). To further cement the feat, a second Gullwing finished second, giving Mercedes a one-two finish.

The race has long since been canceled, but like the Mille Miglia was revived recently as a classics rally, and the vulture-smashing original is to retrace its routes together with the modern Gullwing, the SLS AMG. Our man Paukert is doing just that as you read this and it should be a brilliant trip down memory lane. The initial crop of photos from the event are beginning to trickle in. See for yourself in the gallery below and scope out the details in the release below the fold.

BlackBook.Com Says Used Car Values Rise 4 Weeks Straight

It looks like the used car market is getting pricier. So, if you’re on the fence for any reason about buying a used car, don’t delay. According to BlackBook.com, via a report at Auto Remarketing.com, “wholesale value adjustments were positive for the fourth straight week and for the fifth time in six weeks.”

The report also says the only segments not seeing growth are luxury level vehicles and prestige level cars. Every other segment has seen growth.

AutoRemarketing.com also reports on the truck front that the full-size crossover utility market has been down seven straight weeks. Maybe there are deals to be had there, especially as gas prices keep rising.

The article adds, “As for the truck segments, 13 of the 14 that Black Book tracks showed gains in the last week, as the overall segment climbed for the fifth straight time.”

Is your dog worse for the environment than your SUV?

If Layla the dog looks a little bit guilty in the photo that accompanies this blog entry, it could be because we’ve been talking about Julie Knapp’s article “Make your dog more hybrid, less SUV” at Mother Nature Network.com.

According to Knapp’s article, a recent book by Robert and Brenda Vale called “Time to Eat the Dog? The Real Guide to Sustainable Living” reveals that “dogs are worse for the environment than SUVs.” This claim is based on several factors, including a dog’s diet, some of the chemicals we use to care for our dogs, overpopulation and dog waste disposal. Knapp’s article suggests that “if you don’t have a dog yet or are considering a second pet, you might want to think outside the dog box. According to the Vales, a goldfish is equal to the impact of just two cell phones; two hamsters or four canaries can be compared to a plasma TV; and a cat is only as bad as a Smart Car. Even smaller dogs are better than big dogs.”

I have conferred with Layla, and she refuses to even accept the premise of this article, let alone its conclusion. Everyone knows that Smart Cars are bad enough on their own — where is a dog supposed to ride in one of those things, anyway? — and who ever heard of a goldfish with a cellphone?

If you’re like me, you are constantly making choices based on resources and impact, but comparing an SUV with a dog is a fairly useless distinction, one that demonizes both dogs and SUVs without shedding any real light on the subject. Comparing apples to apples is more useful. When you need an SUV, you need an SUV. I agree that it’s prudent to get the smallest, most efficient SUV for the job.

But when you start messing with my dog, you’re going to get bit.

New York Preview: Subaru WRX goes widebody for 2011

2011 Subaru Impreza WRX – Click above for high-res image gallery

Since the introduction of the third-generation Impreza, Subaru has been making incremental improvements to the rally-bred WRX, first with a significant bump in output for the 2009 MY and now the adoption of the STI‘s widebody design for 2011. And not only does the five-door model benefit from its pumped-up sibling’s sheetmetal, but the sedan gets a much-needed testosterone injection to boot.

With a 1.5 inch-wider track front and rear, the 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX’s stance is decidedly more aggressive, and with firmer rear subframe bushings pulled from the STI and wider 17×8-inch wheels wrapped in 235/45R17 rubber, the 2011 ‘Rex is assuredly stickier than its predecessor.

The cosmetic mods don’t end with the widened fenders, as the front fascia receives a restylized front lip spoiler, partnered with a larger, blacked-out grille and intakes. The whole package only increases the curb weight of the WRX by 34 pounds, and coupled with the “265-horsepower” turbocharged 2.5-liter flat-four, the 2011 WRX has the goods to back up its looks… no matter which body-style you choose. Full details in the press release after the jump and expect a slew of shots from the floor at the New York Auto Show.
