Chrysler 200C patent drawings leaking out?

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show, Budget, Sedan, Chrysler

We may have gotten our first glimpse at what the production version of the Chrysler 200C will look like. Website Noticas Automotivas is reporting that it has managed to get its hands on a slew of patent drawings of the car, and from what we can tell, the new, smaller four-door has stuck fairly close to the concept we first saw at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. That includes the car’s stylish curled front fenders and bulging rear sheetmetal. It looks like the 200C will also wear similar shaped headlights, though whether they turn out to be as sharp looking as the LED/projection units on the concept remains to be seen.

We haven’t heard a whole heck of a lot about the 200C since the car cropped up in the Motor City. With the Sebring finally on its way out for good, we knew that Chrysler had to be hard at work on a replacement – and if these patent drawings are any indication, the new model may just be the 200C. If Chrysler can manage to infuse the car with same attention to detail that we’ve seen in the new Jeep Grand Cherokee and shove the new Pentastar V6 under the hood, it could be a force to be reckoned with. Head over to Noticas Automotivas to check out all of the patent shots.

Chrysler Financial to begin lending once again for Chrysler vehicles?

Filed under: Car Buying, Chrysler, Earnings/Financials

Chrysler Financial hasn’t been doing a whole lot since the domestic automotive implosion of aught-nine. When the Obama Administration’s Automotive Task Force found that the lender didn’t have the wherewithal to continue making large loans to dealers, GMAC was forced to take over lending duties for Chrysler. Part of that decision was due to the fact that last year, used car values were at one of their lowest points in decades. Since the majority of Chrysler Financial collateral involves used cars and trucks, that was a bit of an issue at the time.

But that was then and this is now. Used vehicle values have rebounded in a big way, and as such, word has it that Chrysler Financial is once again looking into making large-scale loans to dealerships across the country. Word has it that Tom Gilman, Chrysler Fianancial’s chief executive officer, has been contacting numerous dealerships in order to get a feel for whether or not there’s enough interest for the institution to return to lending, according to Automotive News. Even so, with most dealers now cozy with GMAC, it may be difficult for Chrysler Financial to reestablish itself as the titan it once was.

Spy Shots: 2012 Dodge Durango/Magnum caught testing near Chrysler HQ

2012 Dodge Durango/Magnum spy shots – Click above for high-res image gallery

Just as Chrysler puts the finishing touches on the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, our spies have captured its platform mate, the 2012 Dodge Durango/Magnum (we still aren’t sure what the final name will be), out testing near the company’s Auburn Hills, Michigan headquarters. Not much has changed since the last time the new Dodge crossover was spied, but seeing the prototype running around near Chrysler HQ means that more of the swirly camouflage could be coming off in the next few months.

When the new Durango/Magnum officially launches next year, expect it to be available with Chrysler’s new 3.6-liter V6 and possibly a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 (much like the new Jeep). The front end looks similar to that of the Ram pickup, and since the Ram brand has been spun off to house Dodge’s truck offerings, don’t be shocked if the new Durango falls under that umbrella. If development and testing continue at a steady pace, we’ll likely get to see the finished product at either the 2010 Los Angeles or 2011 Detroit Auto Show.

Report: Chrysler ends 25-month sales skid by sending 58% of new vehicles to fleets

Filed under: Chrysler, Dodge, GM, Jeep

Just about every automaker posted February sales gains compared to the same month in 2009, and industry-wide sales were up 13 percent for the month. Even Chrysler posted its first year over year gain for the first time in 25 months, albeit by a mere 399 units. So is everybody at the company’s Auburn Hills, MI headquarters celebrating? We’re guessing the answer is no… due to the fact that a knee-wobbling 58 percent of those sales came to fleet customers.

Automotive News is reporting that only 35,832 of those 84,449 sales were made to retail customers. That’s not good, folks. In better times, Toyota would be disappointed if it only sold 35,000 Carmry sedans to retail customers. When AN asked Chrysler about its low sales for the month, a spokeswoman reportedly said, “Fleet sales were very strong this month, and our company sales reflect that.” Big fleet sales will reportedly be temporary, though, as the company still eventually plans to allocate only 25 percent of its sales to fleets.

But while that’s bad news for Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep dealers, the company is likely at least happy that fleet customers are buying again. When the economy hit the skids in the fall of 2008, the fleet market went from a sales oasis for domestic automakers to a discount desert. Chrysler isn’t the only automaker to rely on fleet sales in February, either. General Motors allocated 45,000 of its 144,000 vehicles to fleets, about 31 percent of its total sales.
